Celtic 1-0 Rosenborg

A single goal from an Alan Thompson free-kick was enough to put Celtic on top of Group E of the Champions League.

The Scottish champions failed to reach the heights of their first two encounters with Juventus and Porto.

But they again proved that they can kill games not so much with style as with ruthless efficiency.

And Thompson's 21st-minute strike virtually ends Rosenborg Trondheim's hopes of qualification.

Rosenborg's goal hero from the 1-1 draw with Juventus, Bent Skammelsrud, had recovered from a broken nose and made the Norwegian side's starting line-up.

But Dagfinn Enerly was out with a stomach infection and Bent Inge Johnsen was moved into defence.

Joos Valgaeren recovered from the niggling injury picked up in training with Belgium to start in the Celtic defence.

Neil Lennon had recovered from the injury that kept him out of the Northern Ireland side, but Bobby Petta was missing and Thompson took his place wide on the left.

Celtic were first to threaten and a dangerous Thompson cross just missed Henrik Larsson in the six-yard box.

Didier Agathe picked up the loose ball and his low drive was deflected clear by defender Erik Hoftun on the line.

It looked like Celtic would badly miss the creativity of Petta as they found it hard to create openings.

Rosenborg were looking dangerous on the break and former Celtic man Harald Brattbakk threatened with one incisive run into the box before he was crowded out.

But Celtic made the breakthrough thanks to some trickery from Larsson.

He held off his markers before laying the ball into the path of Stilian Petrov, who was brought down just outside the box by Janne Saarinen.

Thompson stepped up to drive the ball under the wall and into the net past stranded goalkeeper Arni Arason.

His opposite number, Rab Douglas, gave the Celtic support an anxious moment after 27 minutes when he spilled the ball at a corner, his blushes being saved by Lennon's clearance.

Hoftun again came to Rosenborg's rescue early in the second half with an excellent late lunge to thwart Larsson after the Swede burst into the box.

Yet it was Rosenborg who were dominating possession as they searched for an equaliser.

Celtic should have gone further ahead after 62 minutes from another Thompson free-kick.

Sutton's flick found Larsson unmarked 10 yards out, but Arason did well to block the striker's effort.

Rosenborg were finding it hard to create chances and Brattbakk made way for Christer George after 73 minutes.

Celtic continued to pose the greater threat and Arason made two good saves from long-range efforts by Sutton.

The Scottish champions survived a couple of late scares from substitute Frode Johnsen to take the three points.
