Heart of Midlothian 1-4 Rangers

Jorg Albertz was the hammer of the Hearts as his double ensured that Rangers qualified for the Champions League next season.

The German midfielder was man of the match, opening the scoring then adding the third goal late in the second half.

Stephane Adam had equalised for Hearts shortly after the break against a Rangers side reduced to 10 men after the sending off of captain Barry Ferguson.

But Rod Wallace restored Rangers' lead and Steve Pressley was sent off for the home side before Albertz and Tore Andre Flo added some icing on the Champions League cake.

Hearts had gone into the game desperate for points themselves to keep fourth-top Kilmarnock in their sights.

Deserved lead

A Uefa Cup place is up for grabs and the Ayrshire club were three points ahead.

Hearts made three changes to the side that drew 1-1 at Kilmarnock in their previous game.

Out went Grant Murray, Lee Makel and Andy Webster with Kevin McKenna, Thomas Flogel and Robert Tomaschek replacing them.

Rangers made a single change in the wake of their 3-0 home defeat by Celtic on Sunday, with Billy Dodds dropping out and Claudio Reyna returning.

Wallace and Fernando Ricksen came close for Rangers and McKenna and Andy Kirk had good efforts at the other end before Rangers took a deserved lead after 29 minutes.

Albertz scored direct from a free-kick, the ball going in off the far post.

Rangers were down to 10 men two minutes later.

Off the woodwork

Ferguson went in hard and late on Pressley and the Ibrox captain was shown the red card.

Rangers remained in command, an Albertz drive struck the post and another strike from the German flew just wide.

Lorenzo Amoruso charged into the box and fired across the face of goal and wide and an Albertz corner came off the woodwork.

Hearts made two changes after the break with Colin Cameron and Steve Boyack being replaced by Lee Makel and Juanjo.

Spanish winger Juanjo set up Hearts' equaliser after 47 mintues.

His cross was misjudged by Stefan Klos and the goalkeeper pushed the ball against Adam and into the net.

Player of the month Antti Niemi again denied Wallace, but Rangers eventually beat the Finnish goalkeeper to go back into the lead.

Claiming for hand ball

Albertz touched a free-kick into the path of Amoruso, Niemi could not hold the powerful drive and Wallace was on hand to score.

An Adam header came off a defender with Hearts' claiming for a hand ball.

It got worse for Hearts when Pressley was sent off for a second bookable offence after pulling down Albertz.

The German made them pay for that by scoring on the break after 79 minutes.

Flo had provided the pass and Albertz repaid the compliment six minutes later as the Norwegian striker added the fourth with the Hearts backline left exposed.

Rangers: Klos, Ricksen, Moore, Amoruso, Numan, Konterman, Ferguson, Albertz, Reyna, Wallace, Flo.
