Rangers 0-2 Dundee United

Two second-half goals by Steven Thompson and Derek Lilley sealed the points for Dundee United against Rangers at Ibrox.

A goalless first half told the story of an even game, with both sides having chances to open the scoring.

But the departure of the injured Barry Ferguson midway through the second half seemed to trigger a turning point in the game.

And with Rangers looking uncomfortable at the back, it was Thompson and Lilley who took advantage.

Rangers had the first chance of the game when Tore Andre Flo planted a cross on the head of Rod Wallace, but his effort went wide from a good position in the box.

Charlie Miller almost marked his first game at Ibrox since Dick Advocaat sold him to Watford last season with a goal, but Stefan Klos tipped his shot over the bar.

A half-cleared cross fell to Tugay on the edge of the area but his looping shot landed just wide.

Marcus Gayle had a sniff of a better chance soon after when Reyna slung in a cross from the right but the ball bounced too far in front of him off his chest and Jim Lauchlan was able to hack clear.

Both sides were then denied an opening goal by excellent goalkeeping.

United's chance was the first with Lilley's cross finding an unmarked Miller at the back post but Klos was equal to his downward header.

Gallacher was required at the other end to tip Gayle's fierce shot over the bar after an Albertz corner had been caused problems in the box.

Jason de Vos was booked for sending Wallace flying at full pelt and although Albertz's free-kick went through the wall Gallacher was behind it.

Tugay's superb long ball gave Gayle a sight of goal but although Gallacher took the sting off the shot it still squirmed across goal where Wallace was just too late to turn it into an empty net.

Referee Willie Young did not appear after the break and replacement Craig Thomson soon had a controversial decision to make.

He waved play on when Wallace went down under last-man Jamie Buchan's challenge when goalside of his man on a swift counter-attack.

Wallace saw a header hit the top of the bar and go over after a throw-in had been flicked on to the diminutive front man, who was always stretching.

Flo was fouled, and the free-kick move found its way to Tugay outside the box from where he fired a fierce effort at Gallacher.

Reyna played in substitute Fernandes who let fly with a tremendous shot that smacked against the bar but did not bounce over the line.

United then stunned Rangers by taking the lead when Buchan fed Robinson, who crossed for Thompson to deflect a header past the exposed Klos.

Klos dived to stop Danny Griffin's curling free-kick from making it 2-0 and Robinson then blasted a good chance over as United continued to attack.

Lilley wrapped up the points when he got the better of last man Bert Konterman, whose attempt to win the ball was woeful, before firing an instant shot past Klos.
