Nervy Rangers see off Aberdeen

Rangers 1-0 Aberdeen

A first-half strike by Tugay was enough to give Rangers a much-needed victory against a spirited Aberdeen side.

Rangers were unconvincing with their whole first-choice midfield missing through injury and suspension.

Aberdeen's Phil McGuire and Rangers' Neil McCann were both ordered off within minutes of each other in the second half.

Aberdeen had a late penalty appeal turned down but they could not grab that crucial equaliser.

Neil McCann, in the centre of midfield, carved out the game's first chance with a defence-splitting ball to put Tore Andre Flo in.

But Philip McGuire harried him and Flo had to lay the ball back to Kenny Miller, whose shot was blocked by another red shirt.

Flo beat the offside trap and then Thomas Solberg to cross towards Fernando Ricksen and it needed Kevin McNaughton's clearing brave header to deny him.

Aberdeen won two corners in quick succession and Stefan Klos was needed to punch clear.

There was a nervous moment for the away side when Flo and goalkeeper David Preece challenged in the box but although the striker went down the free-kick went against him.

In 34 minutes, Whyte was penalised for downing Flo when beaten by a turn and when Tugay fired the free kick against the wall it looked like the danger was gone.

But the Turk was first to the loose ball and he fired a low shot past Preece's outstretched right arm and into the net.

McNaughton had to hack over his own bar under pressure from Flo but Preece punched away McCann's cross.

At the beginning of the second half, Kenny Miller gifted Aberdeen a chance when he gave the ball to Belabed, who set up Robbie Winters for a shot he sliced across goal from an angle.

Rangers almost went further ahead from their first real threat of the restart when Porrini crossed onto the head of the onrushing Ricksen but his effort bounced just wide.

There was a flare up when Tugay reacted after a Whyte challenge and the Turk was seen to strike out at Philip McGuire as a melee erupted.

Spectacular clincher

Tugay and McGuire were booked and seconds later McGuire was involved in a shoving match with McCann and both were booked, with a red card to follow for the Dons man.

Seconds later, McCann reacted to a clattering from Darren Young and the winger was ordered off.

Preece was injured when he came out of his box to beat Ricksen to a through ball but was able to continue after lengthy treatment.

Tugay came close to a spectacular clincher but his rising shot from outside the box was just too high.

Rangers required an excellent save by Stefan Klos who blocked the speedy Darren Mackie.

Stavrum was then foiled by a last-gasp challenge in the six-yard box as Aberdeen pressed in vain for an equaliser.
