"Alloa were unlucky to go home pointless"

Ayr United 3-1 Alloa Athletic
Glynn Hurst bagged another double to keep Ayr United in touch at the top of the table.

However, they were made to work hard for their 3-1 win over resolute Alloa Athletic.

United were without strikers Gary Teal and James Grady, as well as midfielder Michael Renwick and defender Mark Campbell.

However, inspirational central defender John Hughes returned after a hamstring injury and John Bradford, scorer of four goals for the reserves last week, was on the bench.

First start

Alloa manager Terry Christie had been banned from the touchline for three months for comments made during a match with Morton when he was sent to the stands.

However, he could rely on the experience of new signing Hamish French, who remains on Dunfermline's coaching staff, and the veteran attacking midfielder made his first start.

Ayr striker Eddie Annand missed two good chances before the impressive Steven Boyack, with his first goal since joining on loan from Dundee, put the home side in front in the eighth minute.

They continued to press and were rewarded with a second goal after 23 minutes, when Hurst fired home a Boyack through ball.

Veteran striker Willie Irvine pulled the visitors back into contention on the half hour, when he turned in the box and sent a low shot into the bottom corner.

However, Ayr were always comfortable and Hurst sealed the win with his tenth goal of the season late on.

Ayr: Nelson, McEwan, Hughes, Craig, Lovering, Boyack, Duffy, Wilson, McGinlay, Hurst, Annand.

Subs: Reynolds, Scally, Rovde, Crilly, Bradford.

Alloa: Cairns, Watson, Clark, Thomson, Valentine, Hamilton, Johnston, Irvine, Christie, Evans, French.

Subs: Little, Conway, Brigain, Huxford, McQueen.

Referee: K Clark.
