Morton 1-5 Airdrieonians
Steve Archibald has long been claiming that Airdrieonians' were not reaping the rewards for their fine play and they finally got it right with a five-goal mauling of Morton.

It was also a personal triumph for both playmaker supreme Antonio Calderon and wing-wizard David Fernandez, with the former orchestrating from midfield and the latter setting up chances galore for their trigger-happy mates.

However, perhaps the foundation for Airdrie was built on the introduction of former Aberdeen and Dunfermline defender Craig Ireland, a surprise inclusion on loan from Dundee, who helped give Airdrie a more solid look at the back that has been lacking.

Yet it had looked rosy for Morton when they opened the scoring in the 23rd minute through Karim Boukraa.

However, the cheers had not subsided before Airdrie equalised - sadly for Morton via the own-goal route.

Barry Elliot's cross-cum-shot was flashing across the six-yard line, but the ball struck defender Andy Millen and bounced in to the net.

Just on the interval, Fernandez put Archibald's Spanish-built Airdrie ahead.

Then, following more magnificent midfield work involving himself, Calderon and Fabrice Moreau, the glittering Diamonds proceeded to run riot.

Goals from Moreau, after 56 minutes, and Ireland, on 65 minutes, were followed eight minutes from time by a beautiful, chipped goal from substitute Salvador Capin.

Morton: Boswell, Murie, Davies, Medou-Otey, Raeside, Curran, Matheson, Millen, Whalen, Boukkra, P. McDonald.

Subs: Aitken, Anderson, S. McDonald, Tweedie, Carlin.

Airdrieonians: Broto, Armstrong, McCann, Forrest, Ireland, Moreau, Brady, Sanjuan, B. Elliot, Calderon, Fernandez.

Subs: Taylor, P. Clark, Elliott, Capin, Trialist.

Referee: D McDonald.
