Around The Uk

Saturday, 23 September, 2000, 19:58 GMT 20:58 UK
Ayr United 2-1 Clyde
Clyde self-destructed as they had two players red-carded and threw away their lead to lose away to Ayr United.

Ayr leapfrogged Clyde into second spot in the First Division after former Hibernian midfielder Pat McGinlay headed home the winner 13 minutes from time.

Winger Allan Grant had returned for the division's surprise packages, Clyde, but Andy Kane - who has recently broken into the first team - was unavailable because he will be sitting exams at the weekend.

Only goal difference had separated the Bully Wee from Livingston at the top of the table and manager Allan Maitland was hoping to continue the Broadwood side's good run.

On the bench

Ayr added striker Glynn Hurst, while defender Mark Campbell and striker Eddie Annand were on the bench after returning their battle for fitness in midweek in reserves.

However, manager Gordon Dalziel was still without striker James Grady and defenders John Hughes and Michael Renwick.

The Bully Wee wasted a golden chance on 11 minutes to exploit Ayr's defensive problems when striker Steve Convery missed from the penalty spot.

However, he made amends after 59 minutes, when he rounded goalkeeper Craig Nelson to fire home.

Lost the plot

Annand converted from the spot five minutes later after being fouled in the box by Gordon Greer.

The visitors then lost the plot and had defender Mark McLaughlin sent off for a crude challenge on winger Micky Reynolds before McGinlay's winning goal.

Their misery was complete after 79 minutes, when Grant was sent packing for chopping down the lively Reynolds.
