Brechin 0-3 Cowdenbeath (0-3)

Gareth Wardlaw nods in his first goal
Wardlaw heads in his first goal at Glebe Park

Gareth Wardlaw scored twice as Cowdenbeath defeated Brechin in the First Division play-off final to win a second successive promotion.

Joseph Mbu headed the visitors in front on 17 minutes as a jaded-looking Brechin struggled to deal with the Fifers' aerial threat.

Wardlaw showed great poacher's instinct to nod home soon after.

And the striker bagged his 19th goal of the season on the stroke of half time with a powerful header.

The financially-troubled Blue Brazil will be in First Division for the first time in almost 20 years following a goalless first leg.

Both sides made lively starts, Charlie King's powerful volley ricocheting off the top of the crossbar for Brechin and Paul McQuade slamming the ball against the upright for Cowden.

But Mbu was first to strike, glancing an inswinging Scott McBride corner towards goal and, despite the efforts of Richard Walker who tried in vain to keep the ball out at the far post, the ball ended up in the back of the net.

Wardlaw was on hand to double the advantage on 25 minutes when Hedgemen goalkeeper David Scott could only parry McQuade's attempt into the striker's path.

McQuade came within inches of scoring before Wardlaw struck again, rising above the defence to power home a header after good work from Scott Linton down the left.

Scott was forced into action again soon after the interval, diverting a Mark Baxter drive around the post.

With Cowden happy to sit on their three-goal lead, Brechin, who remain in Division Two, failed to pose any real threat and Rory McAllister firing into the side-netting after rounding David Hay was the best they could offer going forward.

Linton then brought a marvellous save out of Scott as he tried to squeeze the ball home from a tight angle, but the game had already been well won by that stage.
