Queen of South 2-0 Dunfermline

By Sandra Brown at Palmerston Park

Goals by Willie McLaren and David Weatherston secured a win for Queen of the South against 10-man Dunfermline.

Queens keeper David Hutton pulled off a one-handed save to deny Steven McDougall and Greg Ross hit the woodwork with a header for the Pars.

It was the hosts who took the lead in first-half injury-time, Willie McLaren hitting an angled drive home.

Weatherston hooked into the net to make sure of the win and Joe Cardle saw red with nine minutes remaining.

Kenny Brannigan's side have taken four points from six since he succeeded Gordon Chisholm and the Dumfries outfit remain in the shake-up for promotion from Division One.

Dunfermline almost took the lead when McDougall was waiting at a corner and hit a left-foot shot that forced Hutton to palm away.

As the first half wound down, a Willie Gibson free-kick was sent deep for Ross to rise and beat Hutton with a header but the defender's effort rebounded off the junction of the bar and post.

And, within minutes, Bob Harris' corner made its way to McLaren in space and the midfielder fired under the body of Greg Paterson with the outside of the left foot.

The play became scrappy after the break and it was another set piece that produced Queens' second.

Jamie Adams knocked on the delivery and Weatherston applied the finishing touch.

Cardle had just been booked before he tussled with Stephen McKenna and, after getting up, the Dunfermline midfielder lashed out with his studs.

Referee Alan Reid showed Cardle a straight red card and Pars manager Jim McIntyre indicated afterwards that the player would be punished.
