Dundee 2-2 Inverness CT

By David McDaid
at Dens Park

First Division leaders Dundee salvaged a precious point after coming from two goals down at home to Inverness.

Inverness' Adam Rooney missed a sitter in the first half, but set up Richie Foran's headed opener on 46 minutes.

Rooney squared for Eric Odhiambo to tap in their second 13 minutes later, but Brian Kerr replied for Dundee with a fine volley with 12 minutes to play.

Six minutes before the end Gary Harkins hit a 25-yard shot which took a heavy deflection on its way into the net.

The result cuts Dundee's lead at the top to six points over Ross County, who have two games in hand.

But having gone two goals down and struggling to fashion chances it looked like Jocky Scott's men end the match empty handed.

The home side only had one serious effort on goal in the first half, when Leigh Griffiths cracked in a vicious shot which Ryan Esson did well to palm over the bar.

As the first period wore on Inverness came more into the game and should have taken the lead on 34 minutes, but Rooney somehow failed to convert Odhiambo's deft chip over Rab Douglas towards the far post.

But the Highlanders got their goal within 60 seconds of the restart, when Rooney got to the by-line, chipped a delicate cross to the back post where Foran rose virtually unchallenged to score from three yards.

Dundee tried to inject more pace into their play but Inverness doubled their lead when Rooney beat the offside trap to collect Foran's threaded pass, and the forward squared to Odhiambo to score into an empty net.

Inverness looked to have sealed their first ever win at Dens Park and given themselves a huge boost in their own promotion campaign, but Dundee got back into the game out of the blue.

A cross was knocked out of the Inverness box only as far as Kerr, who took one touch before unleashing a volley which swerved past Esson.

With their tails up Dundee pressed for another, and the unlikely comeback was eventually completed thanks to a heavy slice of luck.

Harkins ran forward from midfield, shot from distance, and the ball took a wicked deflection off an Inverness defender and into the net with Esson rooted to the spot.

Dundee manager Jocky Scott:
"I'm delighted that we've come back and got a point when it looked as if we would get nothing.

"For the first 65 minutes I was disappointed with our play.

"But for the last 25 minutes we played as we are capable.

"If we want to achieve what we are trying to achieve then we have to play like that for 90 minutes.

"There was a slice of luck about Gary Harkins' goal but you need luck - and we'll take as much luck as we can get."

Inverness manager Terry Butcher:
"After the game I've had a right go at one or two players because we put ourselves in a great position, we were the better team for much of the game, and yet we haven't won.

"At 2-0 up with 15 minutes to go you should be looking at three points.

"I'm livid about any goal we concede, but particularly the manner of the two goals we did today.

"I don't know what it is. But if we want to go up to the SPL we have to show the correct passion and desire."
