A late goal from Billy Mehmet secured the win but St Johnstone's defeat at Queen of the South would have been enough to send the Buddies up.
Kirk Broadfoot opened the scoring after 18 minutes but Steven Craig briefly threatened to spoil the party with an equaliser early in the second half.
Kick off was delayed by 10 minutes to allow the 7,629 crowd in.
"The fans played a big part and urged the team on," manager Gus MacPherson told BBC Sport.
"And we really need them to show up in numbers for us next season.
"It wasn't much of a game. A bit of nervousness has crept in over the last few weeks but we just needed to get over that line.
"But this team has been outstanding and I don't think we've had the credit we deserve.
"We've been top since the second week in October and every team has raised their game against us."
