Tayport made a mockery of Lochee's pre-match claims that they were over the hill as they claimed the Scottish Junior Cup for the third time.

Gary Middleton got Tayport off to the perfect start with a good finish from close range in the opening minutes.

Robbie Henderson made it two before half time with a well-taken lob from an acute angle.

Lochee had chances after the break but failed to take any of them and Tayport ran out worthy winners.

Middleton started the ball rolling in the third minute.

Steven Stewart beat the Lochee offside trap and his slide-rule pass was met at the front post by Middleton, who side-footed it into the net.

Tayport were by far the more impressive of the sides in the early exchanges, with Stewart posing a particular threat.

He saw a volley saved by United keeper Ross and then hit the post with a header.

Nonetheless, Lochee almost equalised when Craig Robertson's cross was clawed away from the head of Ray McKinnon by Tayport keeper Fraser Fitzpatrick.

Lochee gradually improved but they were stung by a second Tayport goal after 37 minutes.

Ross did well to save an initial drive but he failed to hold the shot and Henderson lobbed it over him from a tight angle to double Tayport's lead.

John Ward headed narrowly wide and Middleton dragged an excellent opportunity the wrong side of the post as Tayport threatened again.

Lochee might have got themselves back into the game three minutes after the break when Fitzpatrick spilled an effort by Robertson, but the keeper reacted well to deny Hagan on the rebound.

Moments later Charlie Cargill fired wide from a good position inside the Tayport box and midway through the half, Fitzpatrick did well to foil Robertson at close range.

Tayport defended well in the latter stages and had chances to add to their own tally, but ultimately settled happily for a 2-0 win.
