Scottish Cup shock specialists Inverness Caley Thistle did it again on Saturday with a hard-fought win over Motherwell at Fir Park.

The critical goal came after only 10 minutes when Barry Wilson left Gordon Marshall helpless with a dipping shot from all of 35 yards.

Motherwell enjoyed plenty of pressure but failed to trouble Mark Brown in the visitors' goal.

Caley Thistle go into the semi-final for the second year in a row.

Stephen Craigan was the first to test Mark Brown in the Caley Thistle goal after four minutes when he hit a powerful drive from 25 yards, which warmed the keeper's hands as he gathered the ball.

But it was the visitors who took the lead with their first attempt on goal. Wilson collected the ball 35 yards out, took a couple of strides and unleashed a shot that flew over Gordon Marshall and into the net.

Motherwell, predictably, pushed forward in search of the equaliser as the first half wore on, but they found the Caley Thistle defence in stubborn mood.

The home side had a decent chance to draw level when Derek Adams flighted a long ball into the path of Lasley, but, before he could pull the trigger, Darran Thomson intercepted to clear for a corner.

Adams then found Alex Burns at the back post, only for Brown to pounce on the ball before the striker could connect.

Burns missed another opportunity when David Clarkson found him in front of goal, but his shot was weak and easily held by Brown.

Paul Quinn then sent a dangerous-looking ball into the box, which bounced awkwardly off Russell Duncan, but Brown managed to claim the ball to avoid an embarrassing own-goal.

Motherwell started the stronger of the two sides in the opening minutes of the second period, but still the visitors held out.

Steven Hammell sent a 35-yard free kick well over the crossbar, but Inverness almost found the back of the net again when Liam Keogh found Paul Ritchie in plenty of space only for the striker to fire wide of the post.

Motherwell won another free-kick in a good position, but Burns saw his 30-yard shot held by the goalkeeper.

Wilson could have wrapped up the victory with 10 minutes remaining when he cut inside two Motherwell defenders, but his effort flew just over the bar.
