Ayr United 4-1 St Mirren

James Grady and Pat McGinlay both grabbed doubles as Ayr United continued their fine form at Somerset Park.

And it was a sorry start to his St Mirren career for goalkeeper John Hillcoat.

Hillcoat was signed from Dumbarton after cash-strapped Saints allowed Ludovic Roy to go to St Johnstone on loan.

The debutant was beaten after only 15 minutes by McGinlay with a low, angled shot from 12 yards.

Grady grabbed his first goal of the night after 34 minutes when he headed the ball home from close range.

Augurs well

The Buddies hit back when Brian McGinty cracked home a long-range effort only 15 seconds after the restart.

But Grady's second goal wrapped up the points when he fired home from six yards after 65 minutes.

And McGinlay put the icing on the cake with a late heade, although Ayr could have scored many more goals as they tore apart the ragged Saints.

It augurs well for Ayr's forthcoming Scottish Cup quarter-final replay and CIS Insurance Cup final appearances.

Manager Gordon Dalziel must be hoping such form had come earlier in the season as it appears to have come too late to put the early-season favourites back in the Division One promotion frame.

Ayr: Nelson, Duffy, Robertson, Craig, McEwan, Wilson, McGinlay, Sheerin, Lovering, Kean, Grady. Subs: McLaughlin, Sharp, Smyth, Chaplain, Dodds.

St Mirren: Hillcoat, McLaughlin, Walker, Bowman, Nicolson, Gillies, Murray, Ross, Quitongo, McGinty, McKnight. Subs: Kerr, Baltacha, Yardley, McKenzie, Robertson.
