CIS Cup finalists Ayr United inflicted a heavy blow on Airdrie's title aspirations with a hard fought victory at Broomfield.

Despite having to play through extra-time at Hampden three days earlier, Ayr were quickly out of the blocks and were unlucky not to take an early lead.

Marvyn Wilson broke well to put in a dangerous cross that Allan McManus almost poked past his own goalkeeper in the seventh minute.

The visitors took the lead in the 21st minute when a John Robertson cross from the right was headed out only as far as the 18-yard line, leaving Wilson to drill a powerful shot beyond Airdrie goalkeeper Neil Bennett.

Airdrie levelled after 63 minutes when Stevie Docherty was fouled by Lee Sharp and earned a penalty.

Owen Coyle's spot-kick was saved by Craig Nelson, but the striker followed up to net his 22nd goal of the season.

The introduction of Brian McLaughlin gave Ayr new options as an attacking force and the little winger forced Bennett into an excellent save.

With the match fizzling out, United bagged the second goal seven minutes from time. Neil Scally's downward header was adjudged by the linesman to have crossed the line and it was enough to earn the victory.

Ayr United: Nelson, Robertson, Sharp, Duffy, Hughes, Craig, Wilson, Chaplain, Crabbe, Grady, Sheerin. Subs: McEwan, McLaughlin, Lovering, Scally, Dodds.
