Eddie Annand makes the league leaders suffer
Eddie Annand makes the league leaders suffer

Ayr savoured victory at the home of the league leaders thanks to Eddie Annand's solitary strike as Gordon Dalziel's men maintained an interest in the First Division title race.

The visitors almost took the lead in the second minute when Pat McGinlay's free-kick was deflected to Lee Sharp but he shot wide.

Scott Crabbe and Mark McCulloch had chances for Livingston before the game erupted after 18 minutes when Sharp fouled Philippe Brinquin.

A number of players from both sides became involved in an unseemly tussle before the referee settled things down.

Delightful

After the scrappy opening Ayr started to take control towards the end of the first half.

Annand grabbed the only goal in the 40th minute when Livingston defender John Anderson's poor header deflected the ball into his path.

The Ayr man fired a delightful right-foot volley into the top corner of Ian McCaldon's goal.

Annand almost contributed to a second goal when he knocked on a long Sharp throw-in to James Grady but he curled his effort wide.

Livingston responded when David Bingham broke upfield and set up Brinquin but the Frenchman's shot was pushed wide by Craig Nelson.

Bingham almost put Livingston level with a fine 25-yard left-foot strike from a free-kick but his effort was just off target.

The home side continued to press but were almost caught with a breakaway when Gary Teale stole the ball after a corner, raced upfield but saw Ian McCaldon punch his driven shot wide.
