Raith Rovers 1-4 Ayr United
Pat McGinlay is in fine scoring form for Ayr
Pat McGinlay is in fine scoring form for Ayr
Pat McGinlay fired a second-half hat-trick as Ayr hit back from a goal down to claim the points at Stark's Park.

For a while it looked like Raith might record their first victory of 2001 after recent signing Mark Jones put them in front.

But veteran former Celtic and Hibernian midfielder McGinlay and striker Eddie Annand struck back for the side who now move into second spot in the First Division.

Rovers had fielded new signing from Livingston Paddy Kelly in defence.

Paul Browne made the game, but fefenders defenders John Inglis and Greg McCulloch failed to make it.

Midfielder Paul Tosh was back from suspension, but attempts to lure Tommy Coyne failed as the veteran striker played for Albion Rovers instead.

Ayr's Gordon Dalziel was without Stockport signing Glynn Hurst, while fellow striker James Grady was out injured.

Fifth straight defeat

Defender Craig McEwan also missed out against his former club due to suspension.

It looked like troubled Raith were about to arrest their decline when former Chesterfield man Jones scored five minutes before the break.

But instead they slumped to their fifth straight defeat as Ayr stormed back in the second half.

McGinlay drew them level on 54 minutes, turning a wayward Neil Duffy shot into the net from six yards.

When Eddie Annand headed in a corner 15 minutes later, the visitors took command.

Nine minutes from time, McGinlay hit a sweet volley from the edge of the box to make it 3-1.

He completed his treble five minutes from time, chesting down a Lee Sharp cross and blasting a great strike into the top corner.

The win keep's Ayr's faint promotion hopes alive but plunges Raith even further into relegation trouble.
