Rangers   2 - 2   Celtic

Scottish Cup highlights - Rangers 2-2 Celtic

Scottish Cup Highlights - Rangers 2-2 Celtic

By David McDaid

Both Rangers and Celtic ended with 10 men as they fought out an enthralling Scottish Cup fifth-round draw at Ibrox.

The home side took the lead inside three minutes from a wonderful strike by teenage midfielder Jamie Ness.

Kris Commons equalised on 17 minutes, before Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster was sent off as he conceded a penalty, which was scored by Steven Whittaker.

Scott Brown levelled with a curling shot, then Rangers' Steven Naismith got a second caution for simulation.

The result means the Glasgow giants have set up a seventh Old Firm derby this season, with the pair also due to play in the Co-operative Insurance Cup final, in addition to their four Scottish Premier League games.

So often when these two teams meet the on-field action fails to live up to the hype, but this time both side served up a fantastically entertaining affair.

With little over two minutes on the clock Rangers stormed into the lead thanks to a stunning strike by Ness.

El-Hadji Diouf's corner was cleared out of the box, but the 19-year-old latched on to the loose ball 25 yards out in a central position, taking a touch before unleashing a powerful shot through a ruck of players high into Forster's net.

Ibrox erupted, and barely had the Rangers fans settled than their team almost doubled their advantage.

Nikica Jelavic got to the byeline and cut the ball back to Steven Davis, who crashed his first-time effort from 12 yards off the crossbar with Forster rooted to the spot.

Celtic had been caught cold and they struggled to bring their lone striker Gary Hooper into the game in the early stages.

But they crept more into the match, and Beram Kayal hit a shot right down the throat of Allan McGregor before Mark Wilson headed just over the bar.

Kayal and Brown were beginning to win the battle in midfield, and as the visitors began to gain the upper hand they drew level through Commons.

A though ball deflected into the path of Joe Ledley inside the box, and the Welshman found Commons arriving at the penalty spot to stroke the ball neatly into the net for his second goal in as many games for his new club.

Forster almost gifted Rangers a second before the break, when he failed to clear a back-pass under pressure from Jelavic, but the keeper managed to scramble to his line to prevent the Croat's deflection from creeping over the line.

But the on-loan Newcastle keeper's day was to end shortly afterwards, as he was shown a red card for bringing down Naismith in the box.

Whittaker took the penalty, blasting the ball low past substitute Lukasz Zaluska into the corner of the net.

Despite being a man down, Celtic continued to enjoy the bulk of the play into the second period, although at times the final pass was lacking.

Approaching the hour mark, Diouf, who was making an effective Old Firm debut, swept an excellent ball across the Celtic six yard box, and although Jelavic made the right run, the striker could not make a clean connection.

But Celtic continued to commit players forward and their efforts paid off when Brown levelled the game for a second time with a sweet left-footed curling shot from 20 yards, after Mark Wilson had done well to set him up.

Almost immediately Rangers were inches away from going ahead again, but Davis was unable to stretch to meet Jelavic's cross-goal pass, with Zaluska missing.

At the other end, substitute Samaras was denied a point-blank shooting chance, when Madjid Bougherra made a timely challenge after deft play involving the Greek and Hooper.

Moments later Samaras was denied a headed goal from just two yards out as McGregor made a wonderful reaction save.

With 15 minutes to play, the match became a 10-a-side contest as Naismith was shown a second yellow card for simulation as he attempted to win his team a second penalty.

Celtic continued to look the more likely to win the tie outright, but both teams are in the quarter-final draw, pending a decisive replay at Celtic Park in early March.
