Aberdeen v Celtic

Co-operative Insurance Cup semi-final highlights - Aberdeen 1-4 Celtic

By Clive Lindsay

Kris Commons inspired Celtic as they destroyed Aberdeen with four goals in the opening 33 minutes to swagger into the Co-operative Insurance Cup final.

New signing Commons set them on their way with a sublime chip into the far corner after five minutes.

Former Aberdeen defender Charlie Mulgrew headed the second four minutes later and Thomas Rogne rose to finish for the third after 20 minutes.

Anthony Stokes made it 4-0 before Scott Vernon's headed reply.

Many of 12,000-odd Aberdeen fans had taken Celtic's fourth goal as a signal to desert Hampden with their dream of a first final since May 2000 having already virtually disappeared.

Celtic dropped the pace, sparing the Dons the spectre of a repeat of that historic 9-0 Scottish Premier League defeat in November, safe in the knowledge that they will face Motherwell or Rangers in the final.

Commons had come straight into the Celtic starting line-up after his transfer from Derby County, replacing the injured James Forrest on the wing.

And the Scotland international made a dream start when he picked the ball up 18 yards from goal and chipped it into the far corner of the net over the despairing figure of goalkeeper Jamie Langfield.

Scott Brown, whose shown a vast improvement in form in recent weeks, was the driving force for Celtic, firing long-range efforts wide either side of that opener and then winning the corner that led to Celtic's second.

Commons' cross was headed towards goal by Anthony Stokes and Mulgrew rose above his marker to send it into the net off the underside of the crossbar from point-blank range against his former club.

Aberdeen immediately had a chance to reduce the deficit when a precise through ball from Chris Maguire set up strike partner Vernon, but the Englishman's low shot hit the outside of the post.

That provided only a moments' respite for the team in red as Joe Ledley chested the ball into the path of Stokes, whose half-volley was turned brilliantly on to the top of the crossbar by Langfield.

Lennon lauds 'irresistable' Celtic

The Dons goalkeeper looked slow seconds later, however, when Rogne rose unmarked 12 yards out and headed low into the corner of the net.

Aberdeen had chances of their own, with Rob Milsom firing over from range and Maguire having a couple of efforts charged down on the edge of the penalty box.

Dons boss Craig Brown hauled off central defender Nikola Vujadinovic after 27 minutes, introducing Ryan Jack into midfield as he attempted to find a formation capable of subduing Celtic while the Serbian headed straight up the tunnel minus his discarded shirt.

Jack had been replaced in the starting line-up with defender David McNamee as Brown attempted to add steel and experience to his midfield.

However, any hope that the youngster could inspire a turnaround of momentous proportions were ended by a moment of madness from Derek Young - in the starting line-up in place of cup-tied striker Nick Blackman, who helped Motherwell into the other semi-final.

Brown apologises to Dons fans

The midfielder raised a hand high above his head to clear a Gary Hooper free-kick that was curling above the defensive wall and Stokes sent Langfield the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Aberdeen responded after the break as they sought to restore some pride and Maguire squandered a chance when he rounded goalkeeper Forster but blasted over the crossbar with his effort from wide inside the penalty box.

The Dons did get one back after 61 minutes, with Vernon rising to head in a 15-yard header from a Milsom free-kick.

Vernon missed a chance to reduce the arrears further with five minutes remaining, firing over from six yards after a good run and pass from substitute Josh Megennis.

Mark Wilson was on hand to clear off the line after Vernon rounded Forster in the dying seconds.

So, as Celtic moved into yet another cup final, the Dons had to make do with a second-half performance that might give them some heart ahead of the midweek league meeting between the sides.
