Hibernian   3 - 0   Irvine Meadow

Derek Riordan pokes Hibs into the lead at Easter Road
Riordan stabbed Hibs in front from close range on 32 minutes

Hibernian survived a few scares before seeing off Junior side Irvine Meadow in the Scottish Cup.

The visitors from Ayrshire hit the woodwork and kept home keeper Graeme Smith busy in the first half.

But Derek Riordan bundled in from close range and Merouane Zemmama powered home a shot before the interval to settle the nerves of the Premier League side.

On the hour, full-back Paul Hanlon found the net after a surging 50-yard run to complete the scoring.

Irvine, who beat Arbroath in November to set up the first ever Scottish up clash between an SPL and Junior side, arrived at Easter Road having not played a competitive match for more than a month.

But they came flying out of the traps, with former Rangers and St Mirren striker Brian McGinty dragging a shot wide before firing over from long range.

Hibs, fielding a full strength team, had the ball in the net when Riordan nodded in Zemmama's cross from point-blank range but the effort was disallowed for a push.

The large travelling support were screaming for a penalty on the half hour when when former Easter Road trainee Richie Barr beat goalkeeper Graeme Smith to a loose ball before taking a tumble.

MY SPORT: DEBATE

However, referee Euan Norris chose to book Barr for diving, which looked a very harsh decision.

A few minutes later Hibs were in front when Riordan diverted David Wotherspoon's low cross into the net from a yard out.

Chris Strain, son of the Irvine manager, wasted a great chance to level when he fired wide on the rebound after Smith had parried his first stinging effort.

McGinty was then desperately unlucky when he saw his clever curling shot from 18 yards come back off the post.

The Junior side found themselves further behind when a mazy run from Anthony Stokes three minutes before the break set up Zemmama to fire into the top corner from 20 yards via a slight deflection.

In first half stoppage-time, a vital interception from Zander Ryan and a terrible close-range miss from Colin Nish prevented Hibs from extending their lead.

After the re-start a lovely double dummy from Nish and Riordan set up a shooting chance for John Rankin inside the penalty area but a lunging block from Gareth Turner sent the ball wide.

Meadow were running out of puff but Strain managed a shot straight at Smith before Hanlon forced a fine near-post save from Michael Wardrope.

However, Hanlon got the better of the Irvine keeper when he was allowed to gallop forward unchallenged from his own half before slotting home.

The clumsy Nish failed to connect from close range and Stokes saw an angled shot saved before cracking a fantastic strike off the junction of post and crossbar as Hibs found more room to work in.

The visitors had one last chance to snatch a goal their efforts merited but Barr lifted his shot too high from 16 yards after a neat passing exchange.

Hibernian manager John Hughes:
"It could have been better but the bottom line is making sure we are in the next round.

"It took a while to get going but once we scored I thought there was only going to be one winner.

"Irvine Meadow deserve great credit. They were organised and resolute."

Irvine Meadow manager Chris Strain:
"I've got to be proud of all the players. They ran their heart and soul out.

"We started off very well and it was a bit of a surprise that Hibs weren't attacking us. I though Brian's shot was net-bound all the way and I thought we should have had a penalty.

"We proved that Junior football is not just kick and rush."
