Talbot ready for Scottish Cup adventure

Auchinleck Talbot, winners of the Scottish Junior Cup eight times, make their Scottish Cup debut on Saturday.

Talbot are at home to perennial Highland League strugglers Fort William as the first round gets under way.

Fellow Ayrshire juniors Irvine Meadow travel to Brora, while Eastern Region Super League Champions Bonnyrigg Rose make the long trip to Fraserburgh.

The fourth junior side to make the tournament's opening weekend, Banks O'Dee, make the trip to Rothes.

Glasgow University and Edinburgh University are in action, with home games against Girvan and Vale of Leithen, respectively.

Auchinleck Talbot, who won the Junior Cup in May, are celebrating their centenary year and have opened their season with five straight wins.

"We'd love to be in the hat when the Premier League sides come in," manager Tommy Sloan told BBC Scotland.

"That's maybe pushing it a wee bit but I think, on our day, we can compete with Second and Third Division sides."

Stevie Mallan is likely to be on the Talbot bench and the 42-year-old is eager for a taste of the action.

"We just want to give a good account of ourselves," explained the striker, who became a grandfather last month. "I think the junior sides managed that last year.

"We've got a lot of good boys at the club and I think we're capable of beating anybody on our day."
