Brechin City 0-2 Kilmarnock

Frazer Wright and Craig Bryson were the scorers for Kilmarnock

Second-half strikes by Frazer Wright and Craig Bryson were enough to see Kilmarnock through to the third round of the Co-op Insurance Cup.

Killie captain Wright was unmarked at the back post at a Mehdi Taouil free-kick and slammed past Craig Nelson.

Bryson ended the contest in 65 minutes when he fired into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Brechin produced a spirited display but a David White header was all they could muster against a resolute Killie side.

Kilmarnock had the best of the first half, with the impressive Nelson saving headers from Manuel Pascali and Wright and making a point-blank block from Bryson.

Gary Twigg thought he had put the Second Division side ahead in the eighth minute when he received a Kevin Byers cross and lobbed Alan Combe. The linesman's flag saved Kilmarnock's blushes.

After a rollicking from Jefferies at the interval, Kilmarnock improved in the second half.

Allan Russell had taken the place of the injured David Fernandez to made his long-awaited debut for the Rugby Park men.

However, the striker had struggled to make an impact and when he was replaced at half-time by Willie Gibson the visitors looked a more potent side.

In 58 minutes the Brechin defence gave Wright far too much space at Taouil's free-kick on the right and his low strike beat 37-year-old Nelson.

Just seven minutes later Garry Hay combined with Gibson on the left to set up Bryson for a thunderbolt which doubled Kilmarnock's advantage.

This cup win, combined with league form which has produced seven points from three matches, represents an excellent start to the season for Kilmarnock.

It's a welcome change in fortunes for the Ayrshire side following the disappointment of last season, which was blighted by injury and loss of form.

Brechin City manager Michael O'Neill:

"We gave them a game all right, but I'm disappointed with the first goal we lost.

"We've played well this season, maybe not at our best for long enough in games, but we'll pick ourselves up and go again on Saturday."

Kilmarnock manager Jim Jefferies:

"We kept taking too long to pass the ball, people were taking too many people on. We never held it up front for any length of time.

"When Mehdi went through the middle the whole game changed because we got ball to feet. Bryson was magnificent second half.

"I gave them a lot of praise at the end of the game because if you're going to give them stick it's only right when they do well that they get the praise."

"The man of the match for me was Manuel Pascali. I thought he was outstanding - winning every header, switching play, destroying moves."
