Hibernian 6-0 Gretna
Steven Fletcher opened the scoring at Easter Road
Steven Fletcher opened the scoring at Easter Road
Hibernian continued their sizzling recent form to demolish Gretna in the CIS Insurance Cup.

Steven Fletcher began the rout with a fabulous free-kick from distance and Scott Brown slammed in a fine strike.

Rob Jones added a header and when Dean Shiels slipped a shot past goalkeeper Alan Main only 24 minutes had passed.

Last year's Scottish Cup finalists were further undone when Shiels chipped in a great effort and Abdessalam Benjelloun powered in a diving header.

The home team made three changes to the side that swept Rangers aside on Sunday, with Shiels, Fletcher and Jay Shields getting a start.

The visitors have a long injury list and ex-Hibees John O'Neil, Jamie McQuilken and David Nicholls were forced to miss out on a return to Easter Road.

Hibs were in front after 11 minutes when Fletcher sent a wonderful 30-yard free-kick just inside the post.

Benjelloun then sent a header over the crossbar from six yards after connecting with a dangerous cross from David Murphy.

Hibs were given a scare when a slip from Shields allowed Colin McMenamin to send a shot narrowly high and wide of the target.

But the home team were running Gretna ragged with their swift passing game and added three more goals in a devastating six minute spell.

Brown drilled a shot beyond Main from the edge of the penalty area after mesmerising his markers with some neat footwork.

Jones powered in a header from a Kevin Thomson free-kick and Shiels rolled the ball beyond keeper Alan Main after a corner had been knocked back into the danger zone.

The margin could have been greater had Main not managed to get his fingertips to a curling shot from Chris Killen either side of goals three and four.

Thomson saw his long-range effort whistle just wide on the stroke of half-time after a great knock-down from Killen.

A great challenge from Danny Granger prevented a Hibs goal early in the second-half as Fletcher rounded Main, following a good interchange with Killen.

Left-back Murphy then cut into the penalty area but blasted his shot straight at the over-worked Main.

But the scoring continued in fine style when Shiels send a wonderful chipped shot over Main from the angle of the penalty box on 63 minutes.

The impressive Shiels then delivered a perfect cross for Benjelloun to throw himself at and head home.

Substitutes Jamie McCluskey and Stephen Glass both went close with shots late in the game as Hibs continued to pour forward against shell-shocked opponents.
