Back on Teesside, Boro defeat Czech side Banik Ostrava 3-0 in their first foray into European footbal in September 2004
McClaren leads his side to Uefa Cup wins over Aigaleo, Lazio and Partisan Belgrade before bowing out to Sporting Lisbon
McClaren continues his international work and helps guide England to the 2006 World Cup with a 1-0 win over Austria
Boro struggle in the Premiership - a 4-0 home defeat by Aston Villa prompts one fan to throw his season ticket at McClaren
However, McClaren's side fare better in the cup competitions, reaching the FA Cup semi-final before losing 1-0 to West Ham
And four days later, Massimo Maccarone's last-gasp goal sends Boro into their first European final against Sevilla
McClaren arrives at FA headquarters in Soho Square shortly before being named as Sven-Goran Eriksson's replacement
And he finally puts pen to paper on a four-year contract, that will begin on 1 August, to end weeks of speculation
The Yorkshireman's first game in charge will be a friendly against Greece at Old Trafford on 16 August
