Tottenham Hotspur assess Gareth Bale back injury

Gareth Bale hobbles off
Bale's form has earned him the plaudit of the world's best left-sided player

Gareth Bale is to see a back specialist after the Wales star was forced out of Tottenham Hotspur's 1-1 draw at Newcastle United on Saturday.

The left-sided player was replaced by Sebastien Bassong after just 11 minutes as Bale hobbled off at St James' Park.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp admitted: "He has had a bad back for the last few weeks and we need to get that sorted out because it is dragging on now.

"We need to get someone to see it and get him back as he is important to us."

Bale's Tottenham career has been hampered by foot and knee injuries since his £5m move - possibly rising to £10m - to White Hart Lane from Southampton in the summer of 2007.

But the 21-year-old, who completed a BBC Cymru Wales Sports Personality and Welsh Footballer of the Year double last year, has been struggling with back trouble in recent weeks.

Redknapp admits Bale's injury is a blow

Bale's performances for Spurs in the Champions League - particularly two stunning displays against reigning European champions Inter Milan - have caused pundits to hail the Welsh international as the best left-sided player in world football.

His injury would be a huge blow to Redknapp and the Tottenham boss hopes to get the problem sorted as soon as possible.

"You don't know with back injuries, do you?" said Redknapp.

"It's a shame. We need him playing for sure.

"It was a big blow. There wouldn't be a better left-sided player anywhere than Gareth Bale, that's for sure."
