Modest Ramsey lauds team effort

Aaron Ramsey celebrates his Wales goal with Gareth Bale
Ramsey scores his second international goal on his 11th Wales appearance

Aaron Ramsey insists 'it was not about me' after the Wales teenager played an instrumental role in their 3-0 friendly triumph over Scotland in Cardiff.

The Arsenal midfielder created two goals before scoring a superb individual effort in a man-of-the-match performance that increased the hype.

But Ramsey told BBC Sport: "I was quite fortunate as I played a part in the goals but that win wasn't just me.

"The movement of our players was good and the whole team played very well."

Ramsey has been hailed as one of Welsh football's future superstars and such an accomplished display will only add to the attention around an 18-year-old that manager John Toshack has been advised to build his team around for the next 15 years.

His second goal in successive internationals on his 11th Wales appearance and his creativity in midfield, albeit against a poor Scotland side, proves that he is already his country's creative heartbeat.

But he was quick to praise his team-mates.

"We played at a high intensity and the win was a great team effort," Ramsey said.

"We were under pressure for the first 15 minutes but after we got the goal, we didn't look back as everyone gave everything for the cause."

Ramsey set up midfield colleague David Edwards for the 16th-minute opener that swung the game Wales' way.

The Wolves star joked his turn and crisp volley was "for" Wales coach Dean Saunders who had often regaled the players about his volleys during his playing days.

But while Ramsey modestly played down his own influence, Edwards was quick to praise Wales' inspiration.

"Aaron is going to be a great, great player and he will be one of the best in Europe when he is in his prime," he said.

"Like his Arsenal team-mate Cesc Fabregas did, he is developing well at such a young age.

"And I played for Wolves against him last week and he was probably Arsenal's best player as he has such a mature head for such a young player."

Ramsey was awarded the man-of-the-match honour despite playing less than an hour as fellow promising teenager Joe Allen had the difficult task of replacing him in the 57th minute.

"I've known him for years and from day one you knew this player was destined for great things," said the Swansea midfielder.

"And now he is coming of age for club and country."

But Ramsey and Wales team-mate Gareth Bale emphasised the collective effort of Wales' young team that had an average age of just 22.

"It was important to get a win as we played at a high tempo," said the Tottenham Hotspur left-back.

"All of the team worked as a unit where as before we might have been working individually but we were together as a team against Scotland and it paid off big time."

Edwards' third international goal was crucial and the established midfielder insisted Wales' new-look midfield was key to victory.

Captain Ashley Williams protected the back four with Edwards and Joe Ledley in central midfield while Ramsey did his damage from a free roaming role behind strikers Simon Church and Ched Evans.

"We were nice and solid with Ashley sitting in front of the defence," said Edwards.

"Joe and I were in front of him and Ramsey was able to capitalise on the free space between their midfield and defence.

"We forced them to give the ball away and when they did, we broke very quickly and that is when we're at our best because we have good runners from midfield and two willing frontmen.

"The shape didn't just bring the best out of Aaron but it brought the best out of the team.

"It was a really good team performance and to keep a clean sheet is a key point."
