Toshack pleased with youngsters

Wales manager John Toshack praised his depleted young side after their 1-0 World Cup qualifying win in Azerbaijan.

Dave Edwards scored the winner three minutes before the break after making the most of panic in the home defence.

"I think we are pleased to have got a positive result, particularly under the circumstances," Toshack told BBC Sport Wales.

"In view of the absentees which has been well documented, I think the side did ever so well."

Toshack admitted that the heat and lack of match practice took its toll on many of the players, but was happy with the way they held out.

'Great win' delights Edwards

"Apart from the Estonia [friendly] game last Friday, some of the players have been five weeks without training in a group or playing," he added.

"The second half there was some puffing and blowing. Fitness-wise we looked a bit short, but in fairness to them, they kept their discipline.

"The last 30 minutes we didn't threaten too much.

"We couldn't get into the last third of the field but I think it's more due to the fact there were tired legs out there and we were winning 1-0 and I think the lads were a little bit cautious.

"There was so much to be satisfied with. Considering the problems we have had building up to this game, it was a very pleasing performance and result.

"We were missing so many players and some of the lads who played have been out of training virtually for five weeks."

David Edwards got the first-half winner, pouncing to slam the ball home after Azerbaijan goalkeeper Farhad Veliyev had spilled Rob Earnshaw's low cross from the right.

606: DEBATE

Captain Joe Ledley led by example, Edwards was outstanding alongside his skipper and at the back Ashley Williams, Craig Morgan and Lewin Nyatanga withstood everything thrown at them.

"I don't want to pick out any player, they were all excellent," Toshack added.

"But Simon Church on his full debut gave us everything he had. He ran and worked all night and can be very happy with his display.

"But there are a lot of better sides than us who have had a lot of trouble in Baku. Azerbaijan have improved considerably over the last five years and nobody hammers them these days.

"We had a small handful of fans here who had paid a lot of money to follow us, and they deserved a result like this.

"I was more than happy to celebrate with them at the end, the team has done them proud."
