John Fashanu is to become the new chairman of Welsh Premier side Barry Town.

According to the club's website, the former Wimbledon and England star will become a major shareholder at Jenner Park, subject to approval at the clubs EGM in the New Year.

BBC Wales understands that Fashanu flew to Geneva in order to seek Fifa permission to take over at Barry Town.

An original Crazy Gang member, the former Gladiator presenter is a Nigerian sporting ambassador and players' agent.

The deal is sure to provide a major investment for the Welsh Premier champions.

It also opens up the possibility of Barry benefiting from an influx of African players.

The clubs Chief Executive Kevin Green said: "We are delighted that the final piece of the jigsaw in our 18 month plan to restructure the club is now in place."

Fashanu's arrival will be a huge boost to the Dragons.

Only last month they were faced with a winding up order following an unpaid debt to Newport County.
