Crewe 1 - 0 Derby

An own goal from Shaun Barker saw League Two Crewe dump Championship Derby out of the Carling Cup.

The defender headed into his own net on the stroke of half-time after Clayton Donaldson had turned Shaun Miller's cross into the box.

It was a deserved opener for the Alex who had seen Donaldson spurn three chances and Dave Artell head just wide.

The Rams pressured after the break but were restricted to long-range efforts from James Bailey and Kris Commons.

The visitors included four ex-Crewe players in their line-up - Robbie Savage, Rob Hulse, John Brayford and Bailey - but their former club were not in a hospitable mood.

Crewe made a bright start as Donaldson missed two good chances before Miller drilled into the side-netting after latching onto Calvin Zola's flick.

Derby were unlucky not to get a penalty when Danny Blanchett looked to have hauled down Ben Pringle in the box, before a superb reflex save from Rhys Taylor kept Barker's goalbound header out.

The Alex saw more chances go begging as Artell headed wide from Ashley Westwood's cross and Donaldson's touch proved too heavy after he was picked out by Lee Bell.

But the League Two side finally broke the deadlock in first-half injury time when Donaldson and Miller combined and Barker nodded in under pressure from Zola.

Miller thought he had doubled the advantage but his side-footed finish came back off the upright with Rams goalkeeper Stephen Bywater beaten.

Derby huffed and puffed in the closing stages but failed to test goalkeeper Rhys Taylor as Crewe held on to seal one of the biggest shocks of the Carling Cup first round.
