Holloway anger at 'racist abuse'

Blackpool striker Jason Euell was interviewed by police after boss Ian Holloway claimed the striker was racially abused by a Stoke fan.

Holloway revealed the incident after his side bowed out of the Carling Cup in the third round with a 4-3 defeat.

"There was one horrible moment when a racist remark was made to Jason by one supporter. I hope the fellow is banned for life," said Holloway.

"It is disgusting, but the stewards believed Jason and threw the guy out."

Holloway added: "People around the fellow should have said they were not putting up with what was said. It is wrong.

"I saw Jason's reaction and tried to calm him down. I thought these days were gone but maybe I am being naive.

"We do not want anything like that. Jason is a footballer - it should not matter about the colour of his skin."

Staffordshire Police confirmed on Wednesday that a man was now in custody following the incident.

"A 47-year-old man remains in custody this morning after a complaint was received that a supporter had made racist comments to a visiting player," said a police spokesman.

Blackpool had been 2-0 up against Stoke before losing to an injury-time strike from Andy Griffin.
