Swansea   3 - 0   Brighton

Stephen Dobbie hit a brace as Swansea claimed a Carling Cup first-round win.

Alan Tate headed against the post from Andrea Orlandi's free-kick, skipper Garry Monk following up with an easy header from four yards for the opener.

Dobbie's header was blocked by Andrew Whing but he followed up with his first goal for the club and then produced a delightful last-minute goal.

The striker chipped the ball over Michel Kuipers when through on the goal, leaving himself a simple tap-in.

The victory was the first for the Liberty Stadium side under new manager Paulo Sousa.

Dobbie delighted to get off mark

The form of Scottish striker Dobbie, signed over the summer on a free transfer from Queen of the South, will be a huge boost for Swansea, who lost leading scorer Jason Scotland over the summer.

But there was more misery for goal-shy Mark Gower.

Having failed to find the net last season following his summer transfer from Southend, the winger scored four times during the Swans' pre-season.

But a shocking first-half miss from two yards means that he is still to register a competitive strike for the Welsh side.

Swansea City boss Paulo Sousa said:
"It was a good result but I'm not 100% happy with the performance.

"We are building as a team but we can improve - 3-0 is not always a good performance.

First Swans win just the start - Sousa

"I care about the club and the squad. Of course, we need new players but not as many as seven or eight. Some players have come in and done well.

"We are missing quality players and important ones like Darren Pratley, Ferrie Bodde and Joe Allen. We have also lost 40 goals and it is not easy. It will take time but we will get better and better."

Brighton boss Russell Slade told BBC Sussex:

"In the first period they played some real slick football and deserved to be 1-0 up at the very least.

"In the second period, I thought for ten minutes just after half time we looked a little bit more interested in trying to get a goal. It wasn't to be and they've hit us on the counter and effectively the second put paid for us trying to get back into the game."
