Extra-time goals by Mike Williamson and Scott Severin spared Watford's blushes as they edged past Barnet to reach the second round of the Carling Cup.
League Two side Barnet had a good early chance when Albert Adomah fired over.
Watford went close when Jobi McAnuff headed wide but they needed a superb save from Richard Lee to keep out Adomah's drive and force extra-time.
Williamson headed home McAnuff's cross before Severin's drive squirmed past Jake Cole to seal victory for Watford.
Watford manager Malky MacKay told BBC Three Counties Radio:
"Games like this are going to be tough and this was no different tonight and make sure we came here with the right attitude because if you don't you get turned over.
"Full credit to the boys for coming here and matching the energy and effort that Barnet showed tonight and eventually that bit of quality showed through.
