Darlington 0 - 1 Leeds United

A poacher's finish by Enoch Showunmi was enough to secure Leeds a place in the second round of the Carling Cup at the expense of a determined Darlington.

Nigerian striker Showunmi toe-poked home a chipped cross from Robert Snodgrass just before the hour mark.

Minutes earlier, Leeds midfielder Bradley Johnson had struck a fierce 20-yard drive against the crossbar.

Darlington battled hard and Mark Bower could have forced extra-time but his header from a late corner went wide.

Leeds boss Simon Grayson told BBC Radio Leeds:

"It was OK - we were a little bit stop-start and we probably didn't play as well as we could do.

"We didn't pass as well as we can but the pitch was a little bit long for that.

"We dug in there and changed the system slightly at half-time, but fair credit to Darlington, they maybe should have scored at the back-end."
