Redknapp relief at cup turnaround

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp revealed how a half-time dressing down transformed the Carling Cup semi-final first leg with Burnley at White Hart Lane.

Burnley led 1-0 at the interval but holders Tottenham ran out 4-1 winners.

Redknapp said: "At half-time you could not see that result coming, that was for sure.

"At half-time I had to get in to them big time and sort a few of them out. We were a different team but we've got to play like that all the time."

Martin Paterson put Burnley in front, but Michael Dawson and inspirational substitute Jamie O'Hara struck early in the second half to put the holders in front.

Roman Pavlyuchenko and Michael Duff's own goal gave the home side a formidable advantage for the second leg and leaves them on the brink of a second successive Wembley appearance.

Redknapp added: "I was impressed with Burnley - I thought they were terrific. In the first half they were fantastic, they played five in the middle, they broke and they passed the ball.

"But we can't play like we did in the first half. We squeezed up second half, got in contact with them and put them under pressure.

We have given ourselves more than a mountain to climb, and there is a long way back

Burnley manager Owen Coyle

"It was nice to get that early goal after half-time. It gave the crowd a lift because the first half was a real disappointment. We really were poor."

Burnley manager Owen Coyle said the result means his side's hopes of reaching the final are slim.

Told that nobody would be backing his team in the second leg, which is at Turf Moor on 21 January, Coyle said: "They are very wise. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work that out.

"But we will go to win the game and see where it takes us.

"We did everything which was asked of us and had looked a good side. But I do not think anyone would have for seen what was going to happen at the start of the second half.

"But when you are playing teams at the top level, if you switch off for a moment, you will get punished."

"I felt if we had kept it nice and compact, we could have taken it back to Turf Moor and had a reasonable chance.

"As it is, we have given ourselves more than a mountain to climb, and there is a long way back."
