First-half penalties from midfielder Michael O'Connor and striker Anthony Elding were enough to see Crewe upset Championship side Barnsley.
O'Connor drilled home on 12 minutes after Tom Pope had been felled by Darren Moore in the box.
Barnsley almost got back on level terms, but Steve Collis turned Diego Leon's free-kick onto the bar.
Crewe wrapped up the win nine minutes before the break, Robert Kozluk fouling Byron Moore and Elding converting.
