Watford 2-1 Hull
Ashley Young
Young's third goal of the season gave Watford the lead
Watford won in normal time for the first time this season as they edged out Championship strugglers Hull in the Carling Cup third round.

Ashley Young put the Hornets ahead after three minutes, curling in a stunning free-kick from 22 yards.

Hungarian striker Tamas Priskin pounced on a wayward back-pass from Ryan France to make it 2-0.

Substitute Nicky Barmby's overhead kick made it a nervous finale for the hosts but they somehow held on.

It was hardly convincing from Watford, though.

In contrast to the second-round win over Accrington - which they also progressed on penalties - manager Aidy Boothroyd fielded a full-strength side.

Priskin came in for the cup-tied Tommy Smith and his first goal for the club gave the Hornets a 2-0 lead but they made life difficult for themselves.

Just two minutes after coming on, former England international Barmby beat keeper Ben Foster with an impressive overhead kick from six yards.

The hosts then had a huge escape in the 78th minute when Foster's mis-hit clearance rebounded off team-mate Jay DeMerit and into the path of Jon Parkin, whose chip went inches wide.

Foster twice came to his team's rescue at the death, saving Parkin's header and Ian Ashbee's 30-yard piledriver as Watford clung on.

  • Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd:
"It was a bit hairy for us and Hull were the better side in the final 15 minutes.

"I asked the players after the game what they thought I should say to them, and one said I should have a go at them for not closing out the game.

"But in the end, I just said: 'Well done. You won'."

  • Hull manager Phil Parkinson:
"The second-half display is reason for encouragement for our league form, but we are making it hard for ourselves by conceding early goals.

"We will hang onto the positives from this match, and take it into our league campaign."
