Wigan survived a Carling Cup scare at home to Watford to go through to the next round after an extra-time win.

Wigan were mostly made up of fringe players and they struggled to assert their authority, Matt Jackson missing their best chance before the break.

But they went in front in extra time when Ryan Taylor scored from the spot after Andreas Johansson was fouled.

Swedish midfielder Johansson secured the victory with two goals in the last three minutes to put gloss on the win.

Wigan struggled to overcome Bournemouth in the last round and their second-string players were again far from dominant against lower division opposition.

Indeed Watford had a fine spell just after half-time and Joel Grant's drive stung Mike Pollitt's fingertips before Pollitt saved again from Grant.

But Wigan stepped it up and a Taylor cross deflected off James Chambers to force a fine save from 41-year-old Alec Chamberlain in goal.

They had to wait until extra time to secure victory though and Johansson did it in style after Taylor's penalty, first finishing off a fine passing move before converting Alan Mahon's cross for the third.

Wigan boss Paul Jewell said:
"I thought we'd give a lot of the players 90 minutes but it ended up 120 minutes.

"We came through unscathed and Andreas Johansson got his first goals for us and Ryan Taylor scored his first goal for us.

"There are plenty of positives to come out of it and another clean sheet."

  • Watford boss Adrian Boothroyd
"In the opening period of the second half we could have perhaps snatched a couple.

"It was like a throw back to the 1930s in the end with the 2-3-5 (formation).

"On another day we might have got something. Credit to Wigan. They're a team based on a hard work ethic."
