Substitute Michael Proctor scored twice as Hartlepool edged into the second round of the Carling Cup with a 3-1 win over north-east rivals Darlington.
Jon Daly bundled Hartlepool in front after 25 minutes as the home team dominated early on.
Proctor came on after 64 minutes and, 11 minutes later, he doubled the lead after charging down a clearance.
Carlos Logan pulled one back with a low shot but, when Daly's header rebounded off the bar late on, Proctor tapped in.
