Newcastle booked their fourth round place with a deserved win over Norwich.
The home side went ahead when Jermaine Jenas forced the ball in from close range from a Laurent Robert corner and Patrick Kluivert almost made it 2-0.
But the home side's dominance was rewarded when Shola Ameobi notched from the spot after Marc Edworthy felled Darren Ambrose in the box.
Darren Huckerby replied from the spot after Ameobi brought down Mathias Svensson but the Magpies held on.
