Cresswell struck the winner in extra time, slotting into the corner from Omar Daley's right-wing cross.
Cresswell fired Preston ahead but the visitors had Claude Davis sent off for fouling Gareth Williams, and Joey Gudjohnsson converted the penalty.
Nathan Blake's header put the Foxes in front before Cresswell's late penalty, and the striker won it in extra time.
