Leeds' Danny Pugh fired his side into the second round of the Carling Cup.
Left-back Stephen Crainey initially delivered a raking crossfield ball for Michael Ricketts, who headed against the crossbar.
Pugh was first to react, stabbing the rebound goalwards, only for Ian Ward to pull off a fine save, but he was again quickest to the follow up and score.
Huddersfield had the best chances either side of Leeds' goal, with Nathan Clarke and Pawel Abbott going close.
