N Forest 2-4 Portsmouth
Jason Roberts in action
(After extra time)

Premiership Portsmouth held their nerve to secure an extra-time victory over Nottingham Forest in their Carling Cup clash at the City Ground.

Jason Roberts scored in the first period of added time and then Yakubu Ayegbini in the second to ensure Pompey's advance to the fourth round.

But their victory was far from easy as Forest put up a resilient display in front of the home fans.

Eugen Bopp gave the Division One side a 1-0 interval lead before a Des Walker own goal and Ayegbini powered Pompey in front after half-time, only for Bopp to force extra-time with a scrappy leveller.

I do not like losing, but when we take stock I think we'll realise we've not done too badly
Forest manager Paul Hart
Andy Reid signalled Forest's intent four minutes into the game when his 25-yard free-kick had to be tipped over the bar in spectacular style by goalkeeper Harald Wapenaar.

But Forest finally snatched the lead three minutes before the break as Matthieu Louis-Jean's precise cross from the byline found unmarked Bopp on the penalty spot.

Portsmouth stepped up a gear in the second half, bringing on big guns Patrik Berger and Ayegbeni as respective replacements for erstwhile Forest favourite Nigel Quashie and Stefanovic.

The Premiership side were rewarded with a goal after 57 minutes when a glancing deflection from Walker allowed Sebastien Schemmel's low cross to beat keeper Darren Ward at the far post.

Portsmouth then moved ahead less than 10 minutes later when Ayegbini blasted a thunderous shot into the back of the net after being supplied by Teddy Sheringham.

But the balance was restored not long after as Harewood crossed from the right and the ball was somehow forced home as Bopp and Arjan De Zeeuw slid to intercept.

Roberts, the on-loan West Brom striker, put Pompey back in front with 11 minutes of extra-time gone, after Sheringham had presented him with ball on the penalty spot.

Ayegbeni then applied the killer blow after a dribble which left Ward floundering on his rump.
