Watford 1-0 Bournemouth

Watford won this Carling Cup first-round clash against Bournemouth after extra time at a sombre Vicarage Road.

A one minute's silence was observed before the game in memory of youngster Jimmy Davis - set for a season-long loan spell with the Hornets - who was killed in a car crash at the weekend.

When the game did begin, it was the home side who carved out the best chances in normal time with Neil Ardley and Micah Hyde forcing Cherries goalkeeper Neil Moss into two very impressive stops.

But to Bournemouth's credit they offered stout resistence and dragged the game into extra-time.

The home side continued to pile on the pressure and were finally rewarded for their perseverance.

In the 108th minute when substitute Scott Fitzgerald - who had only been on the field for three minutes - latched on to Lee Cook's precise delivery and stabbed the ball past Moss from close range.

Watford: Chamberlain, Doyley, Cox, Gayle, Mahon, Hyde, Ardley, Johnson, Helguson, Webber, Dyer.
Subs: Dyche, Lee, Hand, Fitzgerald, Cook.

Bournemouth: Moss, Purches, Broadhurst, Carl Fletcher, Browning, Elliott, O'Connor, Cummings, Thomas, Steve Fletcher, Hayter.
Subs: Stock, Feeney, Stewart, Holmes, Tindall.

Referee: Iain Williamson (Berkshire).
