Linfield's 2-0 win over Lisburn Distillery keeps them top of the Premiership on goal difference

Stuttering Linfield stayed on top of the Premiership table as they recovered from a nervous opening 25 minutes to beat Lisburn Distillery.

The Whites dominated early on and Gary Liggett wasted a great chance as he allowed Alan Blayney to save and the Blues keeper also denied Mark Cooling.

But against the run of play, William Murphy nodded Linfield ahead on 25.

As Linfield took control in the second half, Peter Thompson doubled the lead on 73 with a close-range finish.

The victory keeps Linfield ahead of Crusaders on goal difference and the Blues also have a game in hand.

Linfield made three changes from the defeat by Coleraine with Thompson, Mark McAllister and Marcus Kane replacing suspended Michael Gault, Michael Carvill and Paul Munster.

However, the Blues looked decidedly nervous early on and the Whites, with five changes from Monday's Setanta Cup defeat by Shamrock Rovers, missed two glorious chances to take the lead.

Firstly Liggett was through on goal with only Blayney to beat but the Whites striker appeared to almost have too much time and his eventual shot was straight at the Blues custodian, who tipped over.

After a Glenn Ferguson headed had been cleared off the line, Cooling thought he had given the Whites the lead but Blayney produced a great one-handed save to divert the ball out for a corner.

The home fans were getting decidedly restless but the nerves were eased as Murphy headed Mulgrew's 25th-minute corner past Philip Matthews.

But after Distillery's promising opening, the Whites posed little threat in the second half and Thompson bundled home Linfield's second goal 17 minutes from time.
