Glentoran players celebrate after the penalty shoot-out success

Glentoran manager Scott Young praised his players after the dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Coleraine in the Irish Cup quarter-final replay.

The game finished 3-3 after extra-time but the Glens won on penalties to set up a semi-final clash with Linfield.

"It was a rollercoaster of emotions and we are absolutely thrilled to progress to the semi-finals," said Young.

"I'm proud of my players - they showed character and battled away, even though they were out on their feet."

The Glens looked to have won it when Andy Waterworth put them 2-1 up in the final minute of normal time.

The shoot-out is a lottery and commiserations to Coleraine because it is a terrible way to lose a game.

But Bannsiders striker Marc Mukendi equalised in injury-time and the game was eventually decided in the shoot-out, which the Glens won 3-2.

The east Belfast side can now look forward to a Big Two showdown with the Blues on 9 April.

"We thought we had it won with Andy's goal but 30 seconds later there was deflation," added Young.

"The shoot-out is a lottery and commiserations to Coleraine because it is a terrible way to lose a game.

"There is a lot of naivety in this Glentoran team but that can keep to another day.

"This is huge for our season - the club has been saved, we have a fantastic chairman and a committee board that wants to take us to the next level, although that will not happen overnight.

"The supporters have been very patient this season and most importantly I am delighted for them.

"There will be a massive crowd for the semi-final and it's something which whets the appetite of everyone involved in the local game."
