Linfield need to overcome a 5-3 deficit if they are to progress from the first round of the Setanta Sports Cup.

Daniel Kearns shot Dundalk ahead in the first leg with Peter Thompson levelling from the penalty spot.

Mark Quigley restored Dundalk's lead with a 54th-minute shot only for Robert Garrett to pull it back to 2-2.

Kearns and Quigley scored again for Dundalk and Curtis Allen netted for Linfield before Kearns completed his hat-trick and Dundalk's victory.

In a competitive first half, Dundalk took the lead in the 31st minute. Quigley and Jason Byrne were involved in the move which ended with Kearns running into the penalty area to shoot in from about 10 yards.

Home keeper Alan Blayney had to make a diving save to prevent Byrne's curling effort making it 2-0.

Linfield levelled two minutes before half-time when Nathan Murphy fouled BJ Burns in the area and Thompson scored the penalty.

Quigley shot low into the corner to make it 2-1.

Linfield got another penalty in the 63rd minute when Thompson was brought down by Colin Hawkins. Keeper Peter Cherrie saved Thompson's spot-kick but Garrett followed up to score.

Dundalk took the lead for a third time when Kearns scored from a Byrne pass on 67 minutes.

Eleven minutes later it was 4-2 as Quigley shot in after Byrne had once again set up the chance.

Substitute Allen gave Linfield hope in the 81st minute, pouncing to shoot in after his initial header had come off the woodwork.

Kearns scored a superb goal in stoppage-time, running from his own half to beat Blayney.
