Glentoran 3-1 Linfield

Glentoran lift the County Antrim Shield with a 3-1 win over Linfield

Andrew Waterworth, Mattie Burrows and Grant Gardiner scored as Glentoran beat 'big two' rivals Linfield in Tuesday's Paddy Power County Antrim Shield final.

Waterworth scored an eighth-minute penalty after he had been fouled by Blues defender David Armstrong.

Burrows capitalised on a bad back pass by Chris Casement to net Glentoran's second goal in the 22nd minute.

Linfield grabbed a late goal through Billy Joe Burns but Grant Gardiner got Glentoran's third in stoppage-time.

Burns followed up to blast in an 84th-minute goal after Paul Munster's header, from Marcus Kane's cross, had been blocked on the line.

That looked like setting up an exciting finish but sub Peter Steele found Gardiner who netted an emphatic finish.

There had been some doubt about whether the match would go ahead in freezing conditions but referee Brian Turkington passed the playing surface playable.

It was Glentoran, who trail champions Linfield by five points at the top of the Premiership, who made the better start.

The penalty came when Armstrong's challenge brought Waterworth down and the Glentoran man's penalty was too strong for international keeper Alan Blayney.

Daryl Fordyce had a chance to make it 2-0 for the Glens but his shot was blocked.

However, the second goal did come when Casement's weak pass allowed Burrows to intercept and go on to beat Blayney.

The closest Linfield came to a first-half goal was when sub Andrew Hall had to clear off the line from Philip Lowry's glancing header.

"We have had problems with injuries and suspensions. So many people had written us off but the players came up trumps," said Glentoran manager Scott Young.

"Linfield are champions for a reason and they threw the kitchen sink at us in the second half.

"They are a good side but I think we matched them all over the park."
