Erik Huseklepp struck late to give Norway victory in front of a sparse crowd at the Aviva Stadium friendly.

The Republic made a blistering start and Shane Long netted from a penalty after he was fouled by Brede Hangeland.

Morten Gamst Pedersen sent a superb curling free-kick into the top corner to bring Norway level on 34 minutes.

The impressive Long and Huseklepp wasted good chances before the Norway striker fired in at the backpost from Pedersen's 86th minute cross.

A spate of withdrawals led to Republic boss Giovanni Trapattoni making six changes for the game.

The hosts immediately seized the initiative and took a fifth minute lead courtesy of Long's penalty.

John O'Shea's fine throughball found the the Reading striker and Icelandic referee Kristinn Jakobsson pointed to the spot after Long was wrestled to the ground by Norway skipper Hangeland.

The Republic continued to pile on the pressure and Damien Duff's goalbound shot was blocked before Keith Fahey flashed a volley just wide.

Norway, who sit top of their Euro 2012 qualifying group, came into the game midway through the half but they failed to threaten before equalising.

Blackburn Rovers midfielder Pedersen curled the ball over the wall from 25 yards to find the top corner.

The visitors were buoyed by the goal and Shay Given, making a record 109th appearance for his country, saved from Thorstein Helstad a minute before the break.

Trapattoni made two half-time changes with debutant Jon Walters coming on for Kevin Doyle while Aiden McGeady replaced Liam Lawrence in midfield.

Both sides threatened early in the second half, starting with substitute keeper Espen Bugge Pettersen pushing away Long's angled drive.

Brann forward Huseklepp wasted an excellent chance, sent clear with just Given to beat but his weak lob was easily saved.

Long was also through on goal after nipping in to steal the ball from defender Kjetil Waehler, and like Huseklepp he failed to get a firm connection and his shot was held by Pettersen.

The game began to lose shape and fluency as both teams made a raft of substitutions.

However, Norway produced a classy move to go in front with just four minutes left.

Pedersen slid a dangerous cross to the far post and Huseklepp made up for his earlier miss by calmly slotting in.
