Linfield 4-0 Newry City

Premiership champions Linfield run out 4-0 winners against Newry City at Windsor Park

Linfield replaced Glentoran at the top of the Carling Premiership after this comfortable Windsor Park victory.

Peter Thompson diverted a free-kick into the net to give the Blues an eighth minute lead and Chris Casement headed in to make it 2-0.

City striker Gerard Rowe saw his penalty saved by Alan Blayney before Newry's Davy Munster was red-carded on 42 minutes for a two-footed tackle.

Thompson smashed in on 66 and Aaron Burns drilled home the fourth.

Thompson redirected Robert Garrett's powerful free-kick past Newry keeper Nathan Morley-Hillen to give the hosts the perfect start.

Casement rose highest to head in from a Curtis Allen corner after 25 minutes.

Blayney made to good save to keep out Rowe's spot kick on 33, awarded for David Armstrong's push on Andy Graham.

Munster received a straight red for the challenge on Blues midfielder Michael Gault.

Garrett's pinpoint throughball put Thompson through for his second goal while a low strike from Burns completed the rout 14 minutes from time.

Linfield go a point above their Big Two rivals while Newry slip to 11th, with only goal difference separating Gerry Flynn's side and bottom club Donegal Celtic.
