Derry City 3-0 Shelbourne

Derry City took full advantage of Monaghan's defeat in Cork as they moved four points clear at the top of the Airtricity First Division.

The Candystripes controlled the early proceedings and Shels defender Mick Coburn was sent off for a professional foul on Mark Farren on 35 minutes.

Farren struck Derry ahead on 57 minutes after good work by Ruairi Harkin.

Patrick McEleney doubled Derry's lead on 62 and he added the third after a delightful mazy run on 73.

Stephen Parkhouse and Danny Lafferty tested Shels keeper Dean Delaney early on as Derry made a purposeful start.

Coburn received his marching orders after a blatant foul on Farren as the Derry man looked set to break clear of the Shels defence.

The free-kick came to nothing but the dismissal put the Dubliners on the back-foot for the remainder of the contest.

McEleney had a strong penalty claim turned down after the break but Derry continued to probe intelligently.

The breakthrough came on 57 minutes as Harkin chased a seemingly lost cause to fire a dangerous cross into the box which Farren's outstretched leg diverted to the net.

It was Farren's 17th goal of the season.

Shels keeper Delaney made a double save to deny McEleney and Parkhouse but the second goal came on 62 as McEleney blasted to the net.

The same player, being watched by scouts from his former club Sunderland, struck the goal of the night on 73 minutes after a wonderful run.

Derry move four points clear of Monaghan although the Candystripes have played a game more.
